Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have depression, I have had this some six to seven years, I have tried various medications, but to no avail, I am currently taking Mirtazapine, but it is not helping, I spend a lot of time in my world, I create scenarios where I am a different person living a life the complete opposite to mine, I have a whole array of family and friends in these scenarios and I revert to this more often than not, is this normal?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

How long have you been taking Mirtazapine 15 mg? It usually takes about four weeks to see any benefits. If there are no side effects, your doctor can consider increasing the dose further to 30 mg once daily. You need to be closely monitored by your doctor while titrating up the dose. You have already been on two different antidepressants, which are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). Mirtazapine is a different class of antidepressant, so hopefully, you should find it helpful.

Does your GP see you, or does a psychiatrist treat you? Discuss with them about having psychological therapy along with medication. Therapy will help to identify and correct any cognitive distortions related to depression. It looks like you fantasizing by creating scenarios to escape from a complicated reality. It is a common coping mechanism used by many people, but, if it is taking a lot of your time, it is unhealthy. Talking therapy will help you develop better-coping strategies. I hope this helps. You can contact us again if any further advice is needed.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
