Is it possible for my 55-year-old dad to stop antidiabetic drugs and control his glucose levels through food and exercise?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My dad is 55-year-old and has been diabetic for the last ten years. In the beginning, he had a very high blood glucose level and was asked to take insulin in the form of injections for almost two years. And then, over a period of time, he was asked to stop taking injections and shifted to tablets. Ever since, he has been taking it daily, and it has almost been 7 to 8 years. Is it possible that he can also stop the tablets and completely control his glucose levels through food and exercise? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As I understand, your dad was on Insulin for two years and then switched on to oral antidiabetes drugs. Usually, when blood glucose is very high (on detection), Insulin is given for a short period, and then after achieving good control, the patient is shifted to oral drugs. In type 2 diabetic mellitus (once diagnosed), it is almost impossible to stop the drugs and achieve control with lifestyle modification, weight control, etc. In this case, since there is no information on actual blood glucose levels (Fasting & postprandial) as well as HbA1c% (glycated hemoglobin) and his lifestyle, it is difficult to comment further. If you have any questions, please do come back. Thanks.
