Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am taking Flagystatin pessary for the past ten days. They said it is pregnancy safe. I took a pregnancy test today, and it was positive. Could it be a false positive, or the urine will not be affected by the medication discharge? It is so confusing.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing, and I understand your concern.

The tablet is actually safe in pregnancy, meaning you can take it even during pregnancy. This drug does not prevent pregnancy. It is not a birth control pill. So, you might have been pregnant already, and that is urinary pregnancy test is positive. Can you please tell me when was your last period ? Are you taking any birth control pills? Do you have any vaginal discharge or infection? When was the last time you had unprotected sex? Please answer so that I can help you accordingly. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My LMP was 26th of last month. I had a vaginal yeast infection about ten days back and was prescribed Flagystatin pessary. Today morning, I took a home pregnancy test, and it was positive. I was worried about the result as there was buttery white discharge because of the medications. Will it contaminate the urine when I collected the sample?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, pregnancy positive result cannot be due to medicine you are taking for infection. Maybe you had unprotected sex after the 26th of last month and conceived. That is why the results are positive. If you have not had unprotected sex after LMP (last menstrual period), and the result is positive, it can be false due to the failure of the kit or infection. So what you can do is just repeat the test once again and see. If still positive, then go for a USB (ultrasound) examination that will be the best. Did you have unprotected sex after LMP till now? Do you get periods regularly every month?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, I took the test thrice, and it was positive. My periods are regular, and I was trying to conceive. I was worried if the discharge by the medication might have contaminated my sample.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Then most probably you are pregnant, and the result cannot be false three times, and as you mentioned, you get periods every 26th of each month, and it has been delayed 3 to 4 days already. So most probably, it is pregnancy only, and in between, you got an infection, so nothing to worry about. Continue medicine and go for USG examination. If anything else, please let me know. Thank you.
