Does high dose of Levothyroxine cause low TSH levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, but it was suggested with my ANA tests over the last two years that I also have lupus. My symptoms are out of control and I have developed a mast cell disorder over the last two years. Currently, I am taking Levoxyl, Zolpidem, and Xanax medications. What should I be taking to fix my thyroid? I have attached my lab reports. Do the numbers indicate a need for further treatment? Kindly suggest.

Hi.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You did not mention the dosage for Levoxyl (Levothyroxine). Levoxyl (Levothyroxine) is the thyroid hormone that you are taking for your slow thyroid function, which is the result of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) is low and it might be due to the higher dose of Levoxyl that you might be taking. Your target TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is from one to three and if you are planning a pregnancy it should be less than 2.5 mIU/mL. There is nothing else needed to take if you are already on thyroid hormones. The results you sent me do not show any date, when was it done? What dose of Levoxyl are you taking? What symptoms do you have?

Please give details for further discussion. Thank you.
