How to treat the intense itching caused by herpes infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I think I am in the healing phase of herpes infection. I have been having intense itchy in my butt area for the past two weeks. This itching gave me a lot of discomfort, and I could not even sleep as it happens more at night. I took two doses back to back since I have had two outbreaks in a row. Should I need to retake my medicines to calm the itching?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, you can take medicines to reduce your itching. But before that, I would like to know if you have any medical conditions causing repeated bouts of herpes.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I took medication for UTI for two days, and as I did not have a UTI, I stopped the medicines in two days. No other medical condition.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I do not think your UTI (urinary tract infection) medications have anything to do with your present complaint.Kindly explain in detail about your itching.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You mentioned that you took two doses.

1) What medication do you take for it?

2) Do you have any difficulty while passing stools or bleeding from the back passage?

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I took Valacyclovir. And I do not have any other difficulty or bleeding.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the details.

It looks like post-herpetic pruritis, which is one of the complications associated with the treatment of herpes. There are different treatment options available. It is not that all the patients respond to anti-histamines.

This situation is annoying to the patients as it interferes with their daily activity and disturbs sleep. In the meantime, until you get an appointment with the doctor, use some moisturizing lotion or Calamine lotion to reduce the discomfort. Just to let you know, your doctor may try different medications, including small doses of steroids (mostly topical), to see the response. As I mentioned earlier, not all patients may respond to anti-histamines, but they are the first drug to be tried. Your doctor will guide you further.

Regards.
