Are furthur tests needed after nonreactive HIV duo test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex with a sex worker as well as rimming and protected vaginal sex. After 28 days, I did an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) duo test, and it came nonreactive. Can I have unprotected sex with my wife now? Is the duo test at 28 days conclusive? Do I need a further test?

Kindly guide.

Answered by Dr. Kakkar

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Unprotected insertive oral sex carries a negligible risk of transmission of HIV.

Rimming, too, is not a high risk, and protected sex is safe as far as the risk of HIV is concerned. However, a fourth-generation HIV screening test is considered conclusive at six weeks by most HIV specialists.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

So I did the test at four weeks. Is that conclusive? Can I go for unprotected sex with my wife?

Please help.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Kakkar

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your test is fairly conclusive since yours was a low-risk exposure. I think you can safely assume yourself to be safe and can engage in unprotected sex with your wife.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
