Can HIV spread from using an unclean blackhead remover?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had brought a blackhead remover, which includes a stainless steel needle with a blunt tip and a loop, online. I used it carelessly without cleaning it yesterday. Now, I am scared to death of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) from it.

Please help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) cannot survive for long outside the human body. It is unlikely that using a come-on extractor without cleaning could spread HIV. Kindly mention if there was any bleeding when you attempted to remove the blackheads.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Thank you, doctor, for the reply.

Yes, there was bleeding.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) cannot survive on dry surfaces, and it undergoes desiccation. To date, there has been no report of cases of HIV by casual contact with surfaces. It is unlikely even in your case, too.

Kind regards.
