Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband had unprotected sexual intercourse with one woman and he told me that last week only and he got to know that the woman is HIV positive. Now, I am getting fear about my husband and my health. So far, my husband does not see any health issues and he is saying, he had sex only once. But, I do not believe his words. I am pregnant now after three years, I got a baby now.I want to know whether HIV will affect my husband and me and whether I have to terminate my pregnancy. Will one exposure spread HIV? What are the symptoms, and when will they appear after the exposure? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

First of all, get your and your husband's HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) status checked and be sure that you are negative. Get your HIV tested by the Elisa ELISA (enzyme-linked immunoassay) method and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test levels at a good laboratory or hospital. PCR comes positive even after three days of exposure. Do not have sex without a condom with your husband. Get his HIV status checked up again after one month if he is willing, to be double sure. There are usually no symptoms of HIV infection initially. Go to the ART (antiretroviral therapy) center of a government hospital for further advice.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Should I have to terminate my pregnancy, if the HIV status is positive? I am very much worried about my child. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

If it is positive, there is a danger that you might infect your baby during giving birth. Any HIV medication may lower the chance of infection transfer, but this is not a guarantee. If you are positive, I would advise you to terminate the pregnancy so that you may live your life without worrying about your child's future. Also, remember that being HIV positive does not spell the end of your life. One is able to lead healthy lives free from difficulties thanks to new, very effective medications. If this is true, hold onto your hope.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
