Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

How effective is the Gardasil vaccine against HPV? my primary partner, we are fluid bonded, has been dating, a fully vaccinated against HPV woman, and her fluid bonded partner also fully vaccinated against HPV just found out she has cancerous HPV that she likely got before the vaccine. I am done with two out of three shots, and my primary partner just got his first dose. His potential partner and I both are getting tested for HPV to be on the safe side. Our plan from there is to use condoms for literally everything and dental dams both with his potential partner and me until he is done with his vaccines and then to fluid bond again. Is that a safe option? What would be the risk level there? Not sleeping with his potential partner is not an option to him, and neither of us wants to not have sex with each other. I have a very intense phobia of STI, which has been very difficult. I hope knowing how likely it is for it to be passed on to us will help me get over my fear in this situation. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

To be very truthful, with a vaccine, you may be safe from genital warts; however other STIs like candidiasis, syphilis, gonorrhea always pose a threat. Even vaccines do not offer 100% protection. Even with complete vaccination, I suggest you use barriers and contraceptives and go for yearly screening for HPV and STDs. You are in fluid relation and your partner again with another individual. I suggest you not panic but stay safe and practice safe sex.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your reply. I am asking purely against HPV, the other STIs are not an immediate threat to us at this time, and he and his potential partner who has cancerous HPV would be using barriers forever or until he and his partner test negative for HPV, which to my research cancerous HPV does not go away. He and I might again fluid bond, and she and I have already agreed to annual testing because of his choice to continue being fluid bonded with her infected partner. What are the chances he and I will get it and or spread it around with this plan? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If you are talking about Gardasil 9, it says 100% protection. However, the immunogenic response is best before the age of 26. if you are using quadrivalent Gardasil, it has an efficacy of 70%.

I hope this helps.
