Can an HPV infection happen again after four years of previous infection?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have general questions about an HPV infection that was diagnosed a few years ago. I have no active symptoms. I had two genital warts four years ago and got them removed in that same year. I had no recurrences in the last 45 months. Am I cured of the virus? Am I contagious to others? If yes, then how? Are warts likely to come back after so much time? How should I go about disclosing this to future sexual partners?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A blood test can detect HPV and usually, HPV remains in the blood for four years. Regarding the reoccurrence of warts, it is unpredictable. It might also not come back. But usually, the virus remains for up to four years in the body. Using a condom during this period if blood tests positive is advisable. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply. This is very different from all the other doctors I asked for. This is the fourth opinion I have gotten on the topic and all the other three said that six months with no recurrence of warts means I am clear. And that as time passes by with warts not coming back the smaller the chance they ever will and that I cannot transmit the virus at this point.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it can be up to four years or it might be less but if you want to declare that you are free from HPV then a blood test needs to be done.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
