Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had hypothyroidism for five years, and I am using Thyroxine 25 mcg. Recently I checked my TSH levels, and the value was less than 0.13 mIU/mL, and my anti-thyroglobulin antibodies level at 41 mIU/mL (positive). My anti-thyroperoxidase antibody value was 5 mIU/mL (negative). T3 and T4 tests have not been done recently. Only antibodies were performed, as mentioned above.

1. Does antibody's positive results mean a serious problem, or is it an expected result for all thyroid-related patients?

2. Am I taking a high dose of thyroid supplement tablet compared to my TSH levels (0.13 mlU/mL)?

Please guide me in solving these thyroid problems.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

From what you have mentioned, you appear to have been overcorrected for hypothyroidism. What was your first TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) value when you started the treatment? I suggest you take Thyroxine tablets alternate days after consulting your specialist doctor. Repeat your thyroid function test after six weeks, and then we will review it again.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

My TSH levels were 10 mlU/mL, and the dosage was Thyroxine 100 mcg. Currently, I am taking Thyroxine 12.5 mcg daily. I am really worried about antibodies result. Three years back, antibodies result was negative, and now it is positive. Why?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No need to worry about the thyroid antibodies results. The antibody levels are high because of improper thyroid function.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

Are there any medications to reduce the level of thyroid antibodies? Is it possible with the correct dosage of Thyroxin? Can I reduce thyroid issues through regular exercise and diet and stop taking medications?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Shaikh Sadaf

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The thyroid antibodies are independent entities, and no treatment can changes them. Diet and exercise can help the body's well-being, but you must continue using medicines till your thyroid levels are normal. In addition, you have to check your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels every three months and have a regular follow-up with your specialist doctor.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

You earlier said that high levels of thyroid antibodies are because of the overdosage of medication. Can I stop taking Thyroxine to reduce antibodies?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Shaikh Sadaf

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Medicine use depends on your thyroid function test results only. Thyroid antibody levels do not change with medication.

Thank you.
