Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had irregular periods for the last three months. Last month, I did not get my period. I am unmarried and did not engage in any sexual activity. Suddenly my weight increased from 115 pounds to 126 pounds. I am getting acne on my chin and a lot of facial hair. I am depressed and not able to sleep properly thinking about this. What could be the reason for this? Is it due to any hormonal problem?

Kindly help.

Hello,Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinions on your medical issues.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. According to your description, these are the typical signs of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). Nowadays, PCOS is very common. Irregular periods, scanty menses, acne, excessive weight gain, and facial hair are commonly seen in PCOS. You should do USG (ultrasound) pelvic scan, thyroid profile, and CBC (complete blood count) to confirm the diagnosis. After confirmation, we can start proper treatment. Do not worry as it is not a very serious condition. This can be easily managed with medicines and some lifestyle modifications.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
