What could cause heavy and scanty bleeding episodes in the same menstrual cycle?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am facing a few menstrual issues. It started around the early months of this year. I had a period in the last month that was heavier than normal. There was no bleeding or spotting on the second day. On the third day morning, I had heavy bleeding again. It ended up fading out normally. It lasted for about 12 to 13 days probably in the middle of the last month. Today afternoon I started bleeding heavily again with large clots in the blood. After about three to four hours later I found out that the bleeding had completely stopped. I do not have any insurance so I am in a financially tight situation. I have taken a pregnancy test a couple of times from a local hospital during my last period after the first issue. Everything was negative and they did not find any other serious issues. My mother has a history of endometrial ablation. I was under medication for mental health for six months previously.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your case and understand your concern. As there are clots in the bleeding, it can be considered excessive bleeding. Hence you should rule out the cause before starting any treatment. I advise you the following tests.

1. USG (ultrasonography) pelvis scan.

2. Thyroid profile.

3. Complete Blood Count (CBC).

These tests have to be done to rule out any underlying pathology, and we can start appropriate treatment accordingly. Include more green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet. Keep yourself hydrated. Take at least three liters of water in a day.

Hope this information would help.

Feel free to return if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
