Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past six months, I was severely fatigued and had unstable mood swings. At my regular check up, I found out my T4 levels are borderline. I think T3 is normal, but not optimal. Here are the levels:

TSH 1.73 (0.45 to 4.5)

T3 2.7 (1.4 to 4.4)

T4 0.83 (0.8 to 1.8)

My general physician asked me to take Eltroxin 25 mg whereas my endocrinologist feels that my reports are normal. Since we are planning for a baby this year, I am worried as the physician said it might affect the pregnancy, if I do not take the medicines. And, my cholesterol levels are a little elevated too. Vitamin D is at 19 which is on the lower side. My weight has increased by 8 to 11 lbs. Are these correlated? Should I take the medicine or not? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and understand your concerns.

From what you have mentioned, it appears that you have a normal thyroid function test results. There is no need to take any medications at all. Even if you are planning a pregnancy, this result means that you do not need any treatment. When you do get pregnant, at that time you will have a routine screening for thyroid function. So, do not worry about it. Your symptoms are more due to a high cholesterol and vitamin D deficiency. So, I suggest the following:

  1. Try to exercise for 30 minutes every day by walking briskly.
  2. Eat an absolutely low-fat diet.
  3. Try to get sun exposure on your hands and feet for 30 minutes daily.
  4. You can take Vitamin D capsules 5000 IU daily for a month.

Hope you find my advice of some benefit. Good luck.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
