Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have read that the Yasmin pill can be used as an emergency morning-after pill. How many doses are required and when can we stop taking them? We got a condom slip and so we are doing this. We have done research that my wife can take two Yasmin pills now and then two pills again after twelve hours. Is it correct? Does she need to continue consuming a pill a day for 21 days?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and I can help you. First, it is not essential to have pills for having a scare of pregnancy due to a condom slip. There are some actions that need to be successful for getting pregnant. Firstly, the sperm has to be ejaculated inside the vagina of the female. In your case, I request you to send some details on whether the condom slip had led to the release of sperm in the vagina. Secondly, the sperms need to fertilize the egg. The availability of an egg is based on the fertility window and it depends upon the menstrual cycle. Please mention the last menstrual period, flow, and the length of the cycle. In case, if the sperm fertilizes the egg successfully, then the fertilized egg needs to get implanted in the uterus of the female. Again this is a complex situation and it depends upon the condition in the uterus of the female. So when all these three things happen successfully, then a female become conceived. It is a complex situation and do not be panic due to condom slip. Yasmin pills (Ethinyl estradiol with Drospirenone) are effective when taken immediately after intercourse and the effect of the pill reduces when taken after a considerable time lapse. Please share the details asked above and so that we can decide whether your partner is at risk of developing pregnancy or not. If there is a risk, then Yasmin can be used to manage it.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Regarding the condom slip, I noticed it when I removed it from my penis during the time of ejaculation and so there can be some sperm present or precum while intercourse. During ejaculation, I am unable to recall whether I ejaculated partially inside the vagina or fully outside the vagina. But I remember that the huge portion was present outside. The last menstrual cycle was six days back and it lasted for six to seven days. She had her ovulation period for one and a half days. This incident occurred before 36 hours and two pills were consumed immediately after sex and the second dose of two pills was taken after 13 hours of the incident. Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is a possibility of pregnancy when there is fertilization of an egg by the sperms or due to the precum released by you. But the chance is less when someone has complete ejaculation while the female is experiencing ovulation. So the relative chances of pregnancy are very less and so do not be panic. In addition, the dose of birth control pills taken by the partner will make the uterus unfavorable for implantation and there can be a delay in the release of an egg as your partner was not in her fertility window. So, she is less likely to become pregnant.
