Can a positive hCG after abortion indicate pregnancy?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an abortion at five weeks of gestation 40 days ago. Twenty days after the abortion, I had my follow-up when I still tested positive for hCG. After one week of the follow-up, I got a transvaginal ultrasound scan in which my uterus was empty. And I still tested positive for hCG. Today I still tested positive for hCG. I am not sure what to do. I have not got my period. I am still spotting on and off. I had protected sex once since the abortion. The condom broke halfway through, and we did not finish (no ejaculation). I used a contraceptive pill later. I am not sure what to do or what is happening with my body. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. You can test positive for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) even two months after an abortion. This may be associated with spotting and sometimes a passage of clots. However, the hCG post-abortion comes down drastically immediately after the abortion and then slowly decreases. Do not worry. This is very normal. As your ultrasound scan shows no signs of pregnancy, it is clear. No medical intervention is required (except if there is heavy bleeding). As time passes, the hCG will come back to normal undetectable levels. I hope this was useful.

Regards.
