What to do for a person's depression and sleep trouble?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the last two months, I have experienced episodes of sadness, and at times I have found myself crying for no apparent reason. I also do not like socializing or having long conversations with anyone. I feel irritated even while talking to my mother. I also have trouble sleeping and often feel restless at night. My mood usually worsens close to my menstruation. I have been diagnosed with depression in the past and was prescribed the tablet Sertraline 50 mg for the same. Currently, I am not under any medications. What should I do for my low mood and difficulty sleeping?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. I suggest you to follow a few instructions. Screen yourself for clinical depression. Do a self-rating test of depression like Zung's self-rating depression scale, which you can easily find online, and if it is indicative of moderate to severe depression, consult a psychiatrist in person for evaluation and treatment. Check your blood TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level. Follow a relaxing sleep schedule. Exercise regularly. Consume a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids. Meditate daily for at least half an hour in the morning. This will helps you to relax and ease your anxiety. Share your feelings with family and close friends, as sharing helps a lot. Avoid caffeinated drinks at least eight hours before sleeping. Listen to music to help you relax. Remember, every problem has a solution; you need to try solving it, and help is just a step away.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Investigations to be done

I suggest you get your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels checked.
