Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My uncle, aged 76 years, had experienced abdominal pain with frequent cramps last evening, possibly due to either indigestion, acidity, or gas. To subside abdominal cramps, I gave him Meftal Spas and Pantop 40 mg, following which he started vomiting. After two to three episodes of vomiting, the pain subsided, but the vomiting had not, for which I gave him tablet Ondansetron 4 mg, which did not subside the vomiting. Even though the pain has subsided, he has had multiple episodes of vomiting since the last night. He is not on any other medication except tablet Cilacar 10 for blood pressure. Which medicine should I give him for the vomiting? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As you have described, your uncle might have got acute gastroenteritis, which means the stomach is upset because of infections. Therefore, the medicines need to be given via intravenous route as through the mouth can cause vomiting. I would suggest:

1. Injection of Ondansetron (antiemetic) 8 mg IV (intravenous) thrice daily for one or two days.

2. Injection of Ringer's lactate (sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and lactate in the form of sodium lactate) 1000 mg once to twice daily.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
