Hi doctor,

I am in my mid-twenties. Last week I accidentally pierced my index finger with a safety pin while piercing my cousin's wound, but I did not bleed. She is eight years old, and she is HIV positive. I got one tetanus shot after the incident. Now I am worried if I have transmitted HIV from that incident.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

This is not the usual route of transmission. In hospitals, many such incidents have been reported, and the difference is they get PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) within two hours.

The test is done within two hours. If the result is non-reactive, a retest is done after three months. If that is also non-reactive, you can undergo RNA PCR (polymerase chain reaction) after fifteen days or a fourth generation CMIA (chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay) test kit for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) after 28 days. If the report shows non-reactive, it means HIV negative.

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

It is such a relief.
