Will the PCV vaccine cause fever in a baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby boy had his first dose of PCV vaccination. He is suffering from a fever now. However, the doctor, who gave the vaccination, told me that the PCV vaccine would not cause fever. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

There are two types of PCV available (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine). Painless PCV, which does not cause fever in 99 % of cases, and painful PCV, which is known to cause fever in 70 % of cases. The cost of a painless one is more than a painful one. Hence, people do not normally cause pain. So, it eventually depends on which vaccine has been given.

Also, please do not worry if there is a fever. It should subside in a period of three days without much complication. You can give Paracetamol as per requirement till the fever subsides.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
