Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from depression and porn addiction, and I am taking Prozac for depression. I want to quit my porn addiction and masturbation, but I cannot. It has been for years. Please help. I need to stop this, as it is making me more depressed.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First, it is positive that you are insightful about your problem and actively seeking help to manage the difficulty.

Next, it is important to remember that you will gradually get better with support. Watching porn compulsively is a type of behavioral addiction that is becoming more prevalent in the past several years following widespread internet availability. Fortunately, with the identification of the problem and treatment, this can be managed.

How long have you been taking Prozac (Fluoxetine)? What is the dose? Prozac is an effective medication for treating depression, and along with psychological treatment, it can also help manage porn addiction. Do you have regular follow-ups with your prescribing doctor to review your mental health and response to medication? It is essential to see your doctor regularly.

Have you had any psychological therapy like CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)? CBT will help you identify negative thoughts and behaviors and correct them and develop better-coping strategies.

You can also follow these simple strategies to break the cycle of porn addiction.

1) Minimize access to sexual content on the internet, books, and other avenues. Limit your internet use to one to two hours a day to browse general content. You can install software to block porn websites. So even if you are feeling tempted, you will not be able to access the content.

2) Identify situations that trigger compulsive porn watching so that you can take steps to avoid them. Usually, it happens when you are alone and feeling bored. Try to keep yourself active and engaged in other ways. Do not isolate yourself. Keep regular meeting with family and friends socially.

3) Develop healthy lifestyle choices like regular exercise, hobbies, and other enjoyable recreational activities.

4) Learn to manage stress in your daily life, making you anxious and depressed. Try deep breathing techniques and progressive muscle relaxation exercises. Also, you can take up martial arts training like karate. Tai Chi is available in your city. These are all healthy outlets to manage your day and also helps in managing stress-related problems.

5) Visualize your life goals. What further education and career you want to follow? Plan about your marital and family relationships. It helps to have long term goals to keep your mind focussed and divert from short term distractions.

These simple measures can effectively reduce impulsive porn watching behaviors and help you develop healthy sexual activities and make better life choices.

I hope this helps.
