Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last night my friend's dog licked my hand and I ate food with that hand without washing it. The problem is that I also have a bleeding gum. Am I at a risk to contract any infections or diseases specifically rabies? Kindly advice as I am a little apprehensive.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Rabies virus is found in the saliva of the infected dogs (not all dogs).

Infection can be transmitted through biting of infected dogs where saliva directly reaches our blood.

So theoretically you can be infected but in reality, there are very few cases that infection is spread by licking.

The crucial issues here are:

1. Has the dog been vaccinated against rabies? Are there any signs of sickness on the dog?

a. If the dog is healthy and vaccinated then you should not worry and rabies vaccine is not required.

b. If the dog is sick or unvaccinated, you have to take the full course of rabies vaccine.

c. Schedule of the vaccine will be third, seventh, fourteen, and twenty-eighth day.

d. Regarding other infection, you should not worry.

For more information consult an internal medicine physician online.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

The dog was not sick for sure, but I am not sure whether he was vaccinated against rabies or not. I would not really want to take the course if there is no need for it. Do you think I should take it just because I am not sure if the dog was vaccinated or not?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As the dog is healthy and most probably vaccinated, you do not have to take the vaccine.

You should not worry. There is a very low risk of infection.

For more information consult an internal medicine physician online.
