Every six months I get bad throat, cold and severe cough. Please suggest a remedy.

Hello doctor,

I am 51. I frequently (once in six months or so) go through a cycle of a bad throat, and cold followed by a severe cough (really severe and aggravates further when I am in areas like closed AC) which lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Even if I consult a doctor and take prescribed medicines, the cough will continue after the course is finished. It is so severe I cannot speak, eat or do any other office work. If I am taking cough chewing tablets, the effect will last a maximum of 10 minutes. Please suggest a remedy.

These are usually seasonal viral infections like influenza. What happens is during infection, the virus causes damage to the cells of the throat and your windpipe. Healing of which will take around three weeks. So, even if your symptoms of fever or sore throat are gone, cough or irritation in throat might persist. Plus pollution and smoking further delays recovery.

What I usually suggest is cough suppressant with steam inhalation. Benz pearls (Benzonatate) or non-codeine syrup like Levodropropizine will also help. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicines with their consent.

I would also recommend yearly influenza vaccination if you have comorbidities like heart or kidney disease or diabetes.
