Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 11 weeks pregnant. I had unprotected sex with my husband. Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the placenta is not fully formed. So in this phase, having sex is not very safe. As you know, semen is not a sterile fluid. So, if it enters the cervix or the vagina, this can provoke bleeding, pain, and uterine contractions. Similarly, in the third trimester, around 32 to 34 weeks onwards, the risk of water breaking or preterm pain is a possibility. Many years ago, a method advised for inducing labor pain was to have sex. As semen has a slight infection always, the prostaglandin in the semen can induce labor pain. Now, to be on the safer side, you can go ahead with love-making, foreplay, and even fingering the genitals, but it would be advisable to use condoms when it comes to penetration. Once the water breaks, bleeding or pain starts, and we may not be able to stop it. It may not always occur, but why take the risk?
Hope I have clarified your query. Do write back. All the best. Thank you.
