Common "Uterine Contraction" queries answered by top doctors | iCliniq

Uterine Contraction

Uterine contractions are the contractions of the uterus muscles seen during menstruation and delivery (labor). The smooth muscles of the uterus can contract throughout - during pregnancy and during menstrual cycles. A hormone called oxytocin is released by the pituitary gland to stimulate the uterine muscles to contract (tighten and relax), which enables efficient menstruation and delivery of the baby.
