Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 70 years old, my height is 5 feet 7 inches and I weigh 148 pounds. I have an itchy urethra. It is just Inside the tip. I am on medications for blood pressure, thyroid, and cholesterol.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

An itchy urethra could be part of urinary tract infection associated with renal stones and excess certain crystals in urine or inflammation of the urethra.

So please give me more details in order to narrow the differential diagnosis.

  • Is there any discharge or swollen testis?
  • Is there any burning sensation during urination?
  • Do you urinate more than usual?
  • Urinalysis is required so please provide me with a copy.

You need to drink plenty of fluids until it works.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

There is no discharge or swollen testis. Yes, it was itchy now. I am feeling a little burning sensation only on the tip. What are renal stones?

Can this be treated with antibiotics such as Amoxicillin? I am not urinating more than usual.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

From what you have mentioned, you seem to have urinary tract infection which is a bacterial infection of the pathway of urine which causes a burning sensation.

Most common bacteria are E. coli (Escherichia coli)

I suggest you take Amoxicillin 500 mg every eight hours for one week. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and with their consent take the medicine.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Follow up after one week.

Urine analysis is required.

Renal stones are formed of excess crystals like calcium crystals that could range from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in size.

This can cause colicky pain in the back usually but may manifest with burning urination.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

How does one get urinary tract infection?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There are many risk factors which could lead to UTI (urinary tract infection). They are:

  • Dehydration (taking less of fluids).
  • Not urinating for a prolonged time that is going only a few times to urinate.
  • An enlarged prostate can be a cause in elderly.
  • Presence of crystals and stones can increase the risk.
  • Decreased immunity like in diabetics.
  • As part of a sexually transmitted disease.
