Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What are the worst foods for arthritis? Kindly mention the name of the first food and why it can negatively affect or worsen arthritis symptoms. I am hoping to highlight inflammatory foods, foods high in sugar, foods high in saturated and trans fat, and dairy which may be a cause of arthritis for some people due to its casein proteins. Please try to name a specific food (yogurt) and not a group of foods (dairy) and reference studies when possible. Please specify the name of the second and third food and why it can negatively affect or worsen arthritis symptoms.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are some lifestyle and nutrition recommendations that can be given to any patient suffering from arthritis that may help reduce the pain. A diet rich in omega-3 and antioxidants. Some studies have shown that omega-3 helps decrease swelling or inflammation and the antioxidants help reduce the free radicals in the body. Avoid alcohol and red meat. Some patients suffer from high uric acid levels, which may worsen arthritis symptoms. Red meat contains high levels of purines, which are then metabolized in the kidneys and may affect and increase uric acid levels. Alcohol dehydrates the body and this makes it even more difficult to eliminate the purines or toxins from the kidneys. The easy way to achieve a healthy weight and include omega-3 and antioxidants in the diet is by a Mediterranean diet. This means cutting back on red meat and eating fish and legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas) as the protein source. Omega-3-rich foods are healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds and olives, and also salmon. The Mediterranean diet suggests that you eat lots of vegetables and fruits, which are rich in antioxidants. Stick to natural grains like quinoa or brown rice and avoid processed foods like white bread or pastries.

Thank you.
