Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am currently using braces. A week ago, I got a cut on the inner side of my lower lip. My lip got inflamed. Now I have something like canker sores very close to the outside of my lower lip. Can this be due to an infection? I am unsure if it got worse since I also got a streptococcus infection recently, and am using Penicillin for the same.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry for your injury. Luckily, it is not deep nor does it seem infected. Such injuries from braces or others will usually heal within a few days. Since you are already under proper treatment, there is no need to worry about it getting infected with Streptococcus.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

No need for any investigations for the time being.

Treatment plan

Please keep up your dental hygiene and continue on the antibiotic course, and this lesion will heal within a few days. If your lip got swollen, color changes, or discharge from the wound site; do not hesitate to seek onside medical advice.

Preventive measures

1. Avoid injury. 2. Maintain dental hygiene.

Regarding follow up

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

After reading the query, I did not describe my concern. Those like cankers' sores are not from my cut. They appeared later but were a bit concerned since everything happened simultaneously with the Streptococcus infection. I also experienced a fever.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Some researchers thought that canker can be an overreaction to the streptococcus bacteria because the bacteria are often found in the canker sore. But still, patients with canker sores often have minor injuries from dental injections and toothbrushes in the lining of the mouth. Since your sores are on the lip, they could have been triggered by an injury (even if very mild) or stress like an acute illness. Please be reassured that it is not contagious, and will heal in a few days. There is a very low risk that it will worsen or get infected. Please maintain your dental hygiene. Also, continue the antibiotic course. It will heal spontaneously with no complications.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Regarding follow up

Do not hesitate to have a follow-up whenever you have any questions and you can resend a picture for follow-up once the treatment course is completed for reassurance if it makes you more comfortable. I am always here to help you. Get well soon.
