Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife is 28 years old. She had C-section last month and gave birth to a baby girl. Right now, she is breastfeeding our baby. In between, she complains of loss of smell. We have consulted a local physician. He suspected COVID-19, so now, for the last five days, my wife is taking Azithromycin 500, with Vitamin C and Multivitamin. She tested positive for COVID-19. What to do now? Shall she continue with Azithromycin or Doxycycline, or Ivermectin? She is only complaining of loss of smell, nothing else. Please guide us.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Considering your wife is not having symptoms (except for the loss of smell), she can continue to breastfeed the baby as per WHO guidelines. However, she has to use the mask all time, wash her hands with a recommended sanitizer (which contains at least 70% alcohol) before and after touching the baby. And any other surface or articles in the room to be regularly and frequently sanitized. She need not have to take any medications considering that she already had five days of course treatment. Let her continue Vitamin C and zinc sulfate (available over the counter in pharmacy nowadays). Ensure all other family members take adequate precautions. Avoid visiting her as much as possible (understand she would require help managing newborns and undergo C-section). If helping her, use a PPE kit (gloves, proper mask, and a face shield at least). Proper hand sanitization before and after helping her. Keep monitoring her oxygen saturation (can purchase a pulse oximeter). If it falls below 92%, it needs to visit the hospital. Also, visit the hospital if she develops a fever, body pains, breathlessness, etc.

I hope this helps. Take care. And my congratulations to you both on baby girl. Happy parenting. If you are satisfied with my answer, kindly provide your feedback. Thanks.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
