Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old female who had unprotected sex. I do not get my periods so I had urine and blood work done to detect hCG, which came back negative. Can I still be pregnant irrespective of a negative test? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Chances of you being pregnant are less likely as both tests were negative. If you still have doubts, you can have an ultrasound abdomen and pelvis to rule out pregnancy. The delay in getting periods may be due to hormone imbalance, anemia, thyroid problems, or infection of either the urinary tract or pelvic floor response. If possible kindly do the following tests-

1) Thyroid profile.

2) Pap smear of vaginal discharge for microbiology and others like cervicitis.

3) Urine routine and culture tests.

4) HB (hemoglobin) level and peripheral smear study.

5) Fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels will narrow down your problem.

You need treatment according to the results of tests to be reviewed with your query soon for better understanding and treatment advice.

Thank you.
