Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Recently I started using a face oil with a face wash. I used them before, but I did not have any issues. Now my skin has become dry. My lips are also dry, and the skin is even peeling off. Whenever I eat something spicy, it would irritate it. I would brush my lips to get the skin off and put on Vaseline. Today when I woke up, my upper lip was swollen with tiny bumps (I have attached the photographs with it). But I do not know what I am allergic to.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns. Let me help you to my best. I could see that there is dryness of the lips with the peeling of the skin. It looks like you have dry skin (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity).

Face oil with face wash is mostly not the cause, because you had used it before with no reactions. Do not rub your lips or skin to remove the skin flakes forcibly. It further aggravates the problem rather than solving it. Your skin is not just dry but sensitive as well. Such skin types require utmost care. Follow the below measures for your skin. Though they are general measures for sensitive and dry skin, consulting your dermatologist will help.

1. Do not wash your face with soap frequently. This will further remove moisture from the skin.

2. Use a good moisturizer twice daily after washing the face with lukewarm water.

3. Use soap only once. Such soap should have a pH close to 5.5 or 6 (Moisturex or Sebamed soap).

4. Apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly on lips at night.

5. Avoid using face wash or lipstick that does not suit your skin. Dermatologist help would be ideal here.

6. Use a good sunscreen lotion when you go out (SPF (sun protection factor) of atleast 30 or 40).

Follow these measures for two to three weeks. I am sure it will help you. Also would like to know if you have a history of

1. Allergy or atopy?

2. Do you or any of your family members have asthma?

3. Does anyone in your family have eczema?

If any one of these is yes, then it requires further evaluation.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
