Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 44-year-old male, and I have been taking a 15 mg Zinc supplement to cure my enlarged prostate for one month, as I heard Zinc helps reduce it. In addition to the 15 mg Zinc supplement, I took the 50 mg Zinc capsules for five days in the last 30 days. Now I feel tired and dehydrated, have irritation in my eyes, and have some pain in my feet while walking. Are these symptoms of Zinc overdose? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns. I am not sure if this question is for you as you mentioned your age as 44 years as in such a young age, prostate enlargement is uncommon. Although studies have found that Zinc supplement helps slow the progression of prostate hypertrophy. However, there is limited evidence to suggest that Zinc supplement is the primary prevention of prostate enlargement. The symptoms you are experiencing could be related to Zinc overdose but are not very specific. I am not sure if you have tested your blood sugar levels. If not, please do it. At the same time, test your thyroid hormone levels as well. I would like to know if you smoke or are an alcoholic. If yes, what is the quantity and frequency of it? I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am tired and weak, and I intermittently have slight pain in the side of my stomach. I did a blood test yesterday, and the ALT or SGPT value showed 292 U/L, cholesterol level was 274 mmol/L. Another abnormal reading was the absolute monocyte count showing 0.11 abs. I need your advice on this matter as I feel weak and tired all the time and dehydrated. I took prostate vitamin supplements in the last month for 25 days due to BPH issues. I stopped that supplement after I felt weak. I do not smoke or take alcohol. Kindly suggest.

Hello.

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Do you have any other medical conditions? Do you have a family history of diabetes or hypothyroidism? What is your occupation? Do you get yellowish discoloration in your eyes? Is your urine normal? Is there a change in your weight in recent times? Are you running a fever? You mentioned you have BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy). Does a urologist diagnose it as BPH at this age is highly unusual? Zinc supplements should not cause your current symptoms. Kindly let me know the answer to every question so I can suggest better.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had BPH for the last two years. It started as a UTI, but later it became BPH. I have been drinking high-caffeine drinks for the last two years for energy, which may have contributed to BPH. BPH shows 32 cc in the last scan. My urine is normal, but I cannot empty it fully due to BPH. I consulted a urologist, who prescribed some alpha-blocker, but I stopped because I was allergic to it. I tried prostate supplements but with no improvement. I do not have a fever, a family history of the disease, diabetes, or hypothyroidism. Now I have pain in the side of my stomach, and I feel tired. I do not get yellowish discoloration of the eye. My weight has increased from 48 kg to 57 kg recently. When eating fruits, I notice some tingling sensation in the eye.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am not sure what some supplements you mean. It is a known fact that some supplements may contain heavy metals, especially ayurvedic preparations, which can cause ill effects on health. I suggest not consuming them without discussing them with your doctor. Your acute elevation of liver enzymes ALT (alanine aminotransferase) could be due to these supplements. Also, to evaluate further, you must undergo some investigations, which can give clues about what is happening. As this requires a thorough evaluation, I suggest you visit your doctor. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
