What can I do about my low iron saturation and frequent blackouts?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I just got my laboratory reports with an iron saturation of 7. It is mentioned to seek immediate medical care. My skin is yellow, and I blackout or throw up when standing up. This has been there for a long time. I have been dealing with low iron levels for years. Once a doctor suggested I take an intravenous (IV) iron supplementation. I am currently taking tablet Lorazepam.

Please help me, doctor.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your iron saturation and iron levels are low. So it seems to be iron deficiency. However, yellow skin points towards hemolysis which means red blood cell destruction.

Kindly attach your complete blood count (CBC) report if available. If the hemoglobin level is low, it could be hemolytic anemia with iron deficiency.

To improve iron saturation, you can be given iron sucrose infusion or tablet Orofer XT (Ferrous Ascorbate and Folic Acid). In addition, you can be prescribed (consult with the specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take the medicines with their consent) tablet Ondansetron, a mouth dissolving tablet, to stop vomiting. Meanwhile, consult with a nearby physician for a detailed physical examination.

Thank you and regards.
