Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I found that for the last two months, my period has lasted about 16 days instead of the usual 7 days. There is no pain or cramping, however large clots on occasions. I gained about 15 lbs during quarantine. I am not exercising. I am currently on iron and Kelp supplements daily.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. According to your statement, you have been suffering from prolonged menstrual periods which has lasted for 16 days instead of the usual period like 3-7 days for the last two months.

Prolonged menstrual bleeding may result from some pathological conditions like hormonal and ovulation changes, pregnancy, uterine fibroids or polyps, adenomyosis, thyroid disorders, bleeding abnormalities, medications, obesity, etc.

Treatment depends on causes. You should undergo some investigations such as USG of W/A, urine for beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), blood for beta HCG, thyroid function test, pap smear, prothrombin time, bleeding time, clotting time, etc., to find out the underlying causes for your present sufferings and then treat them accordingly.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Did the clots seem very unusual? Someone told me it could be menorrhagia? I am so concerned. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Excessive menstrual bleeding than usual is known as menorrhagia. Yes, clots seem to be unusual (attachment removed to protect patient identity). It seems to me like the products of conception. It may be a miscarriage. Please undergo for USG (ultrasound) of W/A (whole abdomen) or TVS (trans vaginal scan) to exclude the underlying causes.

In the meantime, you can take Tranexamic acid (three times daily) for controlling your prolonged bleeding.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
