Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32 year old male. A number of my sexual partners have developed sore throats and or flu-like symptoms a few days after we have had intercourse even though I do not develop the same problems. Why?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your problem. Even if you are not developing symptoms, still this can be possible. Avoid oral intercourses for some time and see if the situation remains the same. In that case, we can think that you might have some chronic infection in the oral cavity like in tonsils or pharynx.

This should be treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics like Azithromycin or Ofloxacin. Metronidazole should also be added in order to complete the cover. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicines with their consent. This prophylactic course should solve the problem. Take the course for at least a week. Get your urine culture and routine done to rule out any UTI (urinary tract infection). If that comes normal, then there is no need to get worrried.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

That was very helpful, thank you very much. I will certainly follow up on your advice with my primary care doctor. Follow up question, does this issue with my partners feeling ill seem consistent with any UTI's? Barring chlamydia and gonorrhea since I was recently cleared of having those.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, this is the reason I advised you to get your urine analysis done. Culture and routine will rule out any UTI. Full antibiotic course will help in treating the UTI too. Please give the urine sample before starting antibiotics. Otherwise, false negative results can come.

Drink plenty of water and take cranberry juice for early healing. Avoid any form of sexual intercourse during the antibiotic course.

I hope this helps.

Take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
