The thyroid is a small endocrine gland that secretes the hormones thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin. It has two lobes that are connected by an isthmus and is located in front of the neck. The thyroid hormones affect the metabolic rate and protein synthesis. And calcitonin help in calcium homeostasis. The hormone thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, regulates the release of thyroid hormones. The thyroid disorders include overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), underactive gland (hypothyroidism), nodules, and cancer.
