Dr. Gayathri Ravi., BACHELOR OF DENTAL SUREGRY

Medical Case Details:

I have noticed two cases by now of a kind where the patient had many problems like sensitivity, pain in a well done filling which was done during her pregnancy or lactation period. But the same patient when I re did the filling after her lactation period she did not experience any pain or sensitivity I think this is because of the hormone changes that a women undergoes during this period I just want you opinions and ideas regarding the same

Yes, hormonal changes or fluctuations in women during pregnancy and lactation period causes a lot of oral health alterations like inflammation, teeth erosion ( due to vomiting and acidity), change in salivary pH etc.

Yes, Your observation is very valid, and many clinicians report similar experiences.

    1. Hormonal Influence on Pain Perception

During pregnancy and lactation, levels of estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, and relaxin are significantly altered.

These hormones modulate nociception (pain perception)

They can lower pain thresholds and increase sensitivity.

    2. Pulpal and vascular changes in pregnancy.

    3. Changes in saliva and oral environment.

    4. And many factors like stress, fatigue and central sensitization in preganant women is more.

So these factors mightbe the reason for the pain and sensitivity.
