Child psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry which deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders in children. It aims to understand and prevent the factors that influence the development and progression of mental illness in kids. The early identification and treatment of mental illness are crucial to avoid any permanent psychological and physical damage as the child grows old. Children can develop the same mental disorders as adults, but the symptoms might differ. Anxiety disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, mood disorders, and eating disorders are the most common psychological problems seen in children. Some of the symptoms that a child with mental illness can exhibit are mood swings, overwhelming fear, behavior changes, difficulty concentrating, and unexplained weight loss. A child psychiatrist, with the help of various psychotherapies and medications, helps such a child to lead a comparatively normal life.
