Lymphoepithelial Cyst

Dr. Albana Greca., MD, MMEDSC

Medical Case Details:

Hello, an 11-year-old patient of mine was recently diagnosed with a lymphoepithelial cyst on the parotid gland, 2.3 cm. For the moment, the ENT doctor has suggested antibiotics and multivitamins. No big change since one week. Do you suggest surgery?

I am looking forward to getting your answers soon. Thank you.

First of all in this case of lymphoepithelial cyst of parotid gland , we have to rule out HIV and any autoimmune disease . As many cases are associated with HIV . Once we rule out HIV and autoimmune disease , Next comes whether it is symptomatic or asymptomatic . In case of asymptomatic lymphoepithelial cyst , some times close observation ( wait and watch is recommended ) But if it symptomatic , then there are many options available for treatment eg 1. Needle aspiration and drainage ( it can be repeated ) 2. Sclerotherapy 3. radiotherapy and the most reliable and old method of treatment is complete surgical excision . After treatment it has excellent prognosis . The rate is recurrence is very low . There is no role of antibiotics unless it is infected
