Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common heart disease that causes impaired blood flow in the arteries of the heart. It occurs when the major arteries that supply blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart get damaged, mostly by the accumulation of plaque (fat deposits). Plaque formation narrows the coronary arteries causing restricted blood flow to the heart, which in turn can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and other heart problems. A heart attack results from a complete blockage. Smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, stress, unhealthy diet, and a sedentary lifestyle can cause CAD.
