Root canal treatment is a dental treatment performed to remove infected pulp from inside the tooth. Sometimes, it is done to prevent future pulp infections. Root canal treatment is indicated for caries involving the pulp (pulpitis), non-vital tooth due to any trauma, infection surrounding the tooth root (periapical infection), and tooth fracture. Root canal treatment is a chairside treatment that is done in three steps, namely access opening, cleaning and shaping, and obturation. The dentist opens the root canal after anesthetizing the tooth, and the root canal is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. Then the prepared root canal is filled using a biocompatible material like Gutta-percha. After the root canal is filled, a dental crown is placed on the root canal treated tooth to avoid it from breaking.
