It is a viral infection caused by the varicella zoster virus in those who have had chicken pox earlier. Though the symptoms can be seen anywhere in the body, usually they appear on a small area of one side of the body and include red rashes and vesicles that are itchy and painful, burning, numb or tingling sensation. These can be accompanied by fever, headache, etc. The diagnosis can be done using physical examination, PCR and/or serological testing. The treatment mainly involves antivirals. Symptomatic relief can be given using Calamine lotion, antihistamines, Lidocaine, analgesics.
