Squamous cells are thin and flat cells found on the surface of the skin, the lining of the organs, and lining of respiratory and digestive tracts. One of the most common types of skin cancer that arises from the squamous cell is called squamous cell carcinoma. It is mainly caused by exposure to UV radiation. The signs and symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma are a red nodule, a flat lesion with a crust, red sore inside the mouth, or rough patch on the skin that forms an open sore. In some people, squamous cell carcinoma can spread aggressively and metastasize to other parts of the body. The surgical options available for treating squamous cell carcinoma are electrodesiccation and curettage, surgical excision, cryosurgery, and Mohs surgery.
