Frequent, loose, and watery bowel movement, three or more times a day, is called diarrhea. Diarrhea that lasts for more than a couple of days is a sign of a serious problem. Diarrhea is a symptom seen with many health conditions like Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption, and Addison’s disease. It can also be caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. The most common causes of acute diarrhea are infection with salmonella, campylobacter, and E-coli. Treatment for diarrhea is done with oral rehydration solution (ORS), antibiotics, and antidiarrheal medication like Loperamide, Imodium, and Bismuth subsalicylate.
