Gallstones are stones formed in the gallbladder due to the hardening of the digestive fluids that are produced by the gallbladder. The size of a gallstone can be as small as a grain to as big as a golf ball. The symptoms include sudden and rapid pain in the right portion of the upper abdomen, vomiting, nausea, fever, chills, and back pain. Gallstones are formed when the bile contains too much cholesterol or bilirubin, or if the gallbladder does not empty properly. The types of gallstones are:
1. Cholesterol gallstone – It is made of undissolved cholesterol, and is the most common type. It is yellow in color.
2. Pigment gallstones – It is formed when the bile contains too much bilirubin. It is black or dark brown in color.
