Pediatric oncology deals with the research, treatment, and prevention of cancer in children and young adults. A doctor who is trained in pediatric oncology, and who treats children and young adults with cancer is called a pediatric oncologist. The common cancers seen in children are leukemia (blood cancer), lymphomas (cancer of lymphatic system), and sarcomas (cancer of muscle and bones). Children need to be treated differently and need an experienced pediatric oncologist to look after them. With early detection and proper treatment, most childhood cancers can be treated successfully, and the child can lead a normal life.
