The peripheral nervous system connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. These nerves are fragile and get easily damaged. Any injury or damage to the peripheral nerve is called peripheral neuropathy. The peripheral nerves can get damaged in road traffic accidents, during contact sports, as a result of pressure on the nerve, or due to other health conditions like diabetes. It can result in the loss of sensation, function, or both. Electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction study, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to diagnose this condition. In severe cases, surgery might be needed.
