About "Nailing and plating"

Humerus (bone that runs from the shoulder to the elbow) fracture is usually treated with internal fixation. To hold the fractured pieces of the bone together, the surgeon either uses plates or intramedullary nails.

  1. Nailing – Through small cuts made on the skin, the nails are inserted to lie within the central cavity of the bone. To stabilize the nails, locking screws are inserted in both ends.
  2. Plating – After the fracture site is exposed, the plate is secured with screws.
