The heart diseases seen in newborn babies are called congenital heart diseases. The types of congenital heart defects include aortic stenosis, atrial septal defect (ASD), coarctation of the aorta (COA), Ebstein anomaly, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), patent foramen ovale (PFO), tetralogy of Fallot, truncus arteriosus, and ventricular septal defect (VSD). Congenital heart diseases can be hereditary or can result from taking some medicines or alcohol during pregnancy, mother infected with viral infection during pregnancy, and gestational diabetes. Depending on the type of heart defect, the treatment options are medications, implantable heart devices, catheter procedures, open-heart surgery, and heart transplant.
