Flap surgery is done for advanced cases of periodontitis, where there are bone loss and gingival recession. This surgery aims to regrow damaged bones and tissues, prevent loss of teeth, and to eliminate bacteria and infection. In flap surgery, the dental surgeon separates the gums from the tooth to expose the tartar deposits. The surgeon then removes these tartar deposits, as this is where the bacteria grow and attach. After cleaning, the surgeon stitches the gums back in place. If there is a lot of bone loss, the doctor might also place bone grafts before closing it.
